In 2012 Dutch youth theater will be coming to the Broadway Theater District!

Creators of theater for young people in the Netherlands are recognized worldwide for being particularly daring, artistic and challenging. To introduce US audiences to some of those Dutch companies creating this acclaimed work, The New Victory Theater will kick off the second half of its 2011-12 season with Zoem! New Dutch Theater. The series, which includes four U.S. Premieres all performed in English, runs from January 6 through January 29, 2012 and launches with Rumplestiltskin by Stella Den Haag, followed by Miss Ophelia by Het Filiaal, then it’s Hands Up! by Lejo, a regular puppeteer on “Sesamstraat,” and finally, a stage adaptation of Wuthering Heights by Theater Artemis.

Dutch performer Lejo creates puppet theater with his hands.

Jeepers creepers, where’d ya get those peepers? With expressive eyes that blink, bulge and bashfully bat, one thing is absolute: these hilarious puppets deserve a hand! Using an animated soundtrack and simple props, Lejo (lāhō)—a regular on “Sesamstraat” (the Dutch cousin of “Sesame Street”)—conjures a vast collection of kooky, quirky and oh-so-clever characters. His dynamic digits take on a life of their own to form a finger-munching monster, a high-strung pianist, an absurd bird and other funny friends in this wordless and joyful jaunt for you and your own wide-eyed little wonder.

Dutch theater company Het Filiaal brings Miss Ophelia to the stage.

Soft-spoken Ophelia is rather ordinary, but one day, she experiences something quite extraordinary. In this charming stage adaptation of Ophelia’s Shadow Theatre by Michael Ende (The Neverending Story), two talented and nimble performers use lively storytelling, imaginative homespun puppetry and a sentimental score to dramatize this heartwarming tale. When Ophelia stumbles upon a shadow that “belongs to no one,” she takes the solitary silhouette under her wing. When more shadows arrive, she tucks them into her tiny purse. Soon, unforgettable friendships are forged as Ophelia and her sidekicks share a poignant journey that delights long after the lights dim.

Dutch theater company Stella Den Haag brings a very Dutch version of Rumplestiltskin to New York.

Enchanting Esmiralda becomes frantic when pretentious Prince Edward demands she spin straw into gold… OR ELSE! While mourning her dire fate, dear Esmi encounters a “gnome, goblin, whatever you want to call me” and out of desperation, strikes a dreadful bargain.
