Le Poisson Rouge – New York, NY

On January 15, Grand Band performs Canto Ostinato by Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt, the sprawling minimalist masterpiece for multiple pianos in a concert at Le Poisson Rouge memorializing the composer’s recent death. The evening-length work is a complex tapestry of repetitive layers strung together in a flexible structure, ensuring that no two performances are alike– in the words of Ton van Asseldonk, his ‘compositions are not just single works, but rather a collection of an infinite number of compositions, all hidden in a single written code.’ With this performance of his most famous work, the six pianists of Grand Band pay homage to this creative genius who was at his best when writing for multiple pianos.

The Utrecht String Quartet, one of the most renowned chamber-music ensembles, is internationally known for its versatility and dynamism. Resident in the Netherlands, the musical world of the Utrecht String Quartet is both borderless and boundless. Its musicians adopt a vibrant, versatile approach to their chosen genre, rejecting traditional “museum piece” interpretations out-of-hand. Even in the most traditional works, they succeed time and again in discovering elements that can be interpreted anew. However, it is their continual search for lost or forgotten repertoire and for their collaboration with contemporary composers that has earned them such an excellent reputation in the music world. International tours to countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia and throughout Europe have demonstrated this versatility.

The Dutch-based vocal ensemble Cappella Pratensis – literally ‘Cappella des prés’ – champions the music of Josquin des Prez and the polyphonists of the 15th and 16th centuries. The group combines historically informed performance practice with inventive programs and original interpretations based on scholarly research and artistic insight. As in Josquin’s time, the members of Cappella Pratensis perform from a central music stand, singing from the original mensural notation scored in a large choirbook. This approach, together with attention to the linguistic origin of the compositions and the modal system on which it is based, offers a unique perspective on the repertoire. Founded in 1987, the ensemble’s approach was largely established by its first conductor, Rebecca Stewart. Cappella Pratensis is now under the artistic direction of singer and conductor Stratton Bull, who succeeds other previous leaders Bart Demuyt and Peter Van Heyghen.
